CapyDo vs Apple Reminders

By Camille ·

CapyDo does not replace Apple Reminders. It reads the tasks you already keep there and puts one of them on your Home Screen, so the honest question is not which of the two to pick. It is whether you need anything in front of Reminders at all.

They work on the same tasks

This is the part most comparisons get wrong. CapyDo has no storage of its own. It reads the Apple Reminders that are already in your iCloud, you pick the one you want to do, and it shows only that one. When you tick it off, it is marked done in Reminders. When you add a task from CapyDo, it is kept in Reminders. Open the Reminders app afterwards and everything is where you left it.

Reminders is built to hold everything

That is its job, and it does it well. Due dates, tags, location alerts, shared groceries, smart lists that pull it all together. Holding everything means showing everything, and some days that is not what helps you start, or stay on one thing.

CapyDo shows one thing to do

The widget sits on your Home Screen like a post-it you can tick off, with the task you chose on it. You do not open an app to find out what comes next, you glance. And it stays there until you tick it off, so picking your phone back up puts you in front of what you were doing. The capybara is there too, and if you pick more than five tasks it tells you “5 tasks is already ambitious!”, which is not something Reminders will ever say to you.

What CapyDo does not do

You cannot set due dates, tags or location alerts in CapyDo, and there is no sharing. The Today filter reads the due dates you set in Reminders, and that is all. You do see your tasks when you go in to pick, on the screen headed “Choose your one thing to do”, and everywhere else CapyDo shows a single one. If you want any of that, you keep doing it in Reminders, which is where your tasks are stored anyway. CapyDo works on what comes after, when everything is written down and you still have to get started.

Which one is for you

Reminders on its own is enough if

  • You like seeing your whole day and it does not weigh on you.
  • You rely on due dates, tags or location alerts.
  • Opening the app and choosing is not what slows you down.

Add CapyDo if

  • Your brain shuts down when you see your full list.
  • You want to know what comes next without opening an app.
  • You want to tick it off from the Home Screen and move on.
  • You do not want to move your tasks into yet another system.

Questions people ask

Do I have to choose between CapyDo and Apple Reminders?

No. You can keep both, or only ever open one. If you like Reminders, you carry on capturing and organising there, and CapyDo shows you the next one when you want to get something done without seeing the rest.

If you do not, you never have to open Reminders at all: you write everything in CapyDo, and Reminders is only where it is kept.

Will CapyDo change or delete my reminders?

The only things it writes back are the task you tick off, marked as done, and any task you add from CapyDo. Nothing is moved, renamed or deleted, and if you stop using CapyDo your tasks are exactly where they always were.

Can I choose which Reminders list CapyDo takes tasks from?

Yes, and it is free. Open the picker at the top of the “Choose your one thing to do” screen, or from your profile settings, and choose where your tasks should come from.
